Streaming Mass Media

Video games, DVDs, T.V. show season box sets, and CDs can cost a person a lot of money if purchased in a regular Best Buy. Plus, It can be a hassle driving there. However due to our growing Internet, it makes it very assessable to acquire all different kinds of media from books to music because of streaming. There are different types of streaming. Real-time streaming, such as YouTube, is transferring a file or data over an entire network to a large group. Streaming was originally used because many users did not have fast enough computers to download large multimedia files, but this has created a major problem for the music and movie industries.

There are many websites where you can stream movies that are in theaters for free. This poses a major concern for the box office and Hollywood. If you remember earlier in the year, the movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, was leaked to the Internet before ever hitting the big screen!

However, there are many websites where you can watch t.v. shows and movies for free and it's legal. Hulu.com shows recently aired episodes of NBC, FOX, and ABC programs that are sponsored by commercial advertising.

Here's a video that shows examples of how streaming can be bad, with the X-Men movie, and how it can be moving in a positive direction, CBS Sports to Stream the Masters Live.

  2. I watch most of my movies online so i know exactly what your talking. The music is so easy to download or even real-time stream now-in-days with youtube and all these different websites. It sucks to be a artist because we can just listen to there music online instead of buying there CD.

  4. From a technical standpoint, streaming is an interesting medium, because while a user does download a file, they are not necessarily storing it on their computer. This allows users to watch videos, without actually possessing the file. I think sometimes the media industry forgets the importance of these technology advances, but the Hulu and other legal video sites would not be possible without server support for streaming video.

  5. Streaming is very useful. Hulu is my favorite because of how recent and excellent quality the videos are. Hulu makes it easier to also not have to spend the full half hour or hour that the show usually takes. Though I understand the music industry's view of that musicians are making music and want to get paid for it. I believe people should make things for the sake of making them, but there are those that want tons of money and that is their reasoning for getting involved in the area. This battle of easy to use streaming and cost/benefit analysis makes the debate very difficult, but it seems that inovation is winning out. The future of industries affected by streaming and the general internet will be interesting and unpredictable.
